The Chinese Embassy hosted a welcoming reception for the Guandong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team, who have been in Fiji for two days, providing free cataract surgeries at the CWM Eye Clinic. Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the relationship between Guandong, China, and Fiji, highlighting the advancements made in infrastructure, medical care, and education through their cooperation.
Ambassador Zhou recalled the establishment of a sister-city relationship between Guandong and Suva in 2011, which has led to fruitful collaboration in various fields such as infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchange. Notable projects funded by Guandong include the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and upgrades to Marist Brothers High School.
According to the Ambassador, cataracts pose a serious challenge for many Fijians, impacting their ability to support their families. The Bright Medical Team has made a significant difference by providing essential surgeries. Since 2013, they have been serving Fiji and other Pacific Island nations, performing free surgeries that have benefited over 200 patients, earning them the nickname “Angel of Light” among the local population.
Hung Wenyong, a specialist in cataract surgery and a member of the Bright Medical Team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to treat 50 eye patients in Fiji, with 47 suffering from cataracts. He noted that while the main goal was to assist patients, strengthening the bond between Fiji and China was also a positive outcome of their visit.
The ongoing collaboration between China and Fiji has generated significant economic advancements, creating hope for continued improvements in healthcare and education.
