The Fiji Amateur Boxing competition, organized by the Kwaca Na Vatu Boxing Club in Navua on Saturday, was a tremendous success, featuring a record 50 bouts. This event represented the largest boxing competition in Fiji over the last year, highlighting the growth of amateur boxing in the country.
Cam Todd, head coach of Fiji Amateur Boxing, expressed enthusiasm about the event and praised the Navua venue for its first-time hosting of an amateur boxing competition. He noted the impressive turnout of an excited crowd, stating, “First time Amateur Boxing in Navua, what a big crowd and the venue was great and perfect for boxing.”
Todd recognized the potential of the athletes despite some areas needing improvement. “I’m seeing a lot of potential; there is a little bit of work to do, but the enthusiasm and potential of the athletes fighting is good,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, Todd announced plans for another event in Navua in December, which will feature the New Zealand junior youth team, adding an international aspect to the competition. “I’m hoping to get another international event here; we have the New Zealand junior youth team coming in December, and I would really like to host it in Navua.”
The Kwaca Na Vatu Boxing Club had a notable presence at the competition, with at least 20 boxers participating. Todd said, “The club has at least 20 boxers that participated in the competition, which is a big number. For a brand-new club, they are doing well.”
He praised the club’s determination and community support, stating that while the boxers are still learning, they demonstrate great heart and strength. “They need a little bit of work in their technique, but the support they get from the community is just amazing,” he added.
Todd encouraged more youth to take up amateur boxing, highlighting the values and life lessons the sport can provide.
