Keleto Takele of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) emerged victorious by securing a gold medal in the 57-60 kg category after defeating his fellow RFMF member, Rusiate Qalo, in the boxing finals held at Suva’s LICI Court as part of the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl. Despite Takele’s success, the overall boxing competition was claimed by the Fiji Police Force.
After his win, Takele expressed gratitude, stating, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He attributed his triumph to overcoming various challenges during their month-long training camp, emphasizing the difficulties faced, such as inadequate nutrition and intense early morning runs designed to enhance endurance.
This year marks Takele’s first full year in boxing, where he has participated in seven matches since joining the Army Boxing Club. He cited spiritual preparation as a key motivator that helped him persevere through demanding training sessions. Living in the village of Navunikabi in Namosi, he mentioned his brother’s influence as both a trainer and fellow boxer, who encouraged him to pursue boxing within the army.
Takele aims to reshape perceptions about boxing, which is often viewed as an aggressive sport. He insists that it is rooted in discipline, focus, humility, and determination, and he encourages young people to take up the sport for self-defense and fitness.
Overall, Takele’s success not only highlights his personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration for youth to engage in sports that promote physical fitness and resilience.
In a positive light, Takele’s journey illustrates the potential for personal growth and community engagement through sports, emphasizing the importance of supportive family and mentorship in achieving one’s goals.
