Fiji’s Bold Water-Energy Strategy: A Game Changer for Sustainability?

The Coalition Government is set to enhance international collaboration aimed at improving water services in Fiji, acknowledging the financial constraints facing the nation.

Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the integral connection between water and energy, emphasizing that discussions around climate financing must take this relationship into account.

He pointed out that for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, the availability and accessibility of essential utilities, including water and energy, are vital for the survival of local communities, along with infrastructure such as roads.

Tuisawau stressed the importance of promoting water-energy connections at the grassroots level to help mitigate poverty and create a significant positive impact on everyday life.

He suggested that the focus on this nexus is essential when considering climate financing, particularly in evaluating natural spring or groundwater sources with advanced solar technology, including solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants.

The Minister proposed that innovative programs structured around smart national frameworks can act as a transformative force, particularly benefiting maritime communities.

Additionally, he announced that the Coalition Government has made strides in its engagement with catchment landowners, obtaining Cabinet approval for a policy framework aimed at compensating landowners for standing trees in catchment areas.

Tuisawau affirmed the government’s commitment to listening to all stakeholders, particularly landowners, and resolving their concerns within existing legal structures.
