The Fisheries and Forestry Ministry of Fiji is committed to enhancing governance, sustainability, and economic opportunities for all citizens. In a recent parliamentary update, Minister Alitia Bainivalu detailed several strategic initiatives aimed at promoting growth in the fisheries and forestry sectors.
Highlighting the Ministry’s efforts, Bainivalu mentioned the ongoing execution of the National Fisheries Policy and the Aquaculture Development Plan, both vital for the sector’s advancement. She also indicated that the Ministry is reviewing the Inshore Fisheries Management Bill and the Offshore Fisheries Management Act. These legislative efforts are designed to address the shifting needs of the fisheries industry while strengthening sustainable practices and governance in coastal fisheries. Bainivalu is optimistic that these bills will be finalized in the current parliamentary session, underscoring their significance to coastal areas and Fiji’s economy.
As part of its forward-looking agenda, the Ministry is preparing for the implementation of Aquaculture Regulations set for 2025, which will create a comprehensive regulatory framework for the aquaculture industry. In addition, Fiji is set to host the Pacific Tuna Forum later this year, bringing together global leaders in the tuna sector to promote innovation and sustainable management methods.
In the forestry domain, the Ministry is finalizing the review of the Forest Act 1992, ensuring it aligns with contemporary forestry management principles. The initiative includes expanding protected forest areas from 17 to 19 reserves, which will conserve 17% of Fiji’s landmass. Plans are also underway to restore 50,000 acres of mangrove ecosystems, essential for shielding coastal communities and enhancing biodiversity.
Furthermore, the Ministry is revising Mahogany legislations to foster job opportunities within the forestry sector, particularly for women and youth-led enterprises, promoting inclusive economic growth.
These initiatives are aligned with previously established strategic goals, showcasing Fiji’s dedication to sustainable resource management and economic resilience.
