In a proactive move to bolster disaster readiness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in conjunction with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has unveiled new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative, aimed at students in years 9 to 13 and their families, seeks to instill a culture of preparedness as the cyclone season approaches.

Inoke Raikoso, a Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, noted the significant challenges encountered in nurturing such a culture among youth. These challenges are exacerbated by the vulnerability of many communities and the aging infrastructure of various schools, some of which have existed since the 1800s. The distribution of these educational materials is designed to address these issues directly.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, Isoa Talemaibua, emphasized the meaning behind the distribution event, stating, “This is not just about handing out 10,000 calendars and resources; it’s about celebrating the partnership that reflects our commitment to helping individuals, families, and businesses in Fiji be more prepared for natural disasters.” He asserted that the calendars and materials are vital tools to remind everyone of their personal responsibility regarding disaster preparedness.

Over the past year, more than 50,000 households and nearly 70,000 students have already benefited from similar awareness campaigns, with an additional 50,000 homes expected to receive materials this year. This extensive outreach underscores a broader commitment to cultivating a knowledgeable and resilient community as Fiji readies itself for an impending cyclone season that typically runs from November to April.
