The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS), in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund, has formed a steering committee that includes a variety of government and non-government organizations focused on creating a National Population Policy. This initiative has sparked a two-day consultation in Suva, where key stakeholders brought forward pressing issues such as the development of infrastructure in maritime areas, market access, rural development, youth empowerment, improved education, enhanced employment opportunities, better health facilities, and environmental challenges.
During the discussions, participants engaged in a thorough examination of social, economic, environmental, and population-related factors that impact the nation. FBoS CEO Kemueli Naiqama commented on the importance of the consultation, emphasizing its significance for both the government and the people of Fiji in enhancing quality of life and community welfare. He indicated that the comprehensive policy developed from these discussions will be submitted to Parliament for further action.
The Permanent Secretary of Finance, Shiri Gounder, remarking on the forum’s conclusion, stressed the Fiji Government’s commitment to an inclusive and consultative approach in policy-making. He stated that this type of multi-stakeholder collaboration is vital for creating a well-rounded policy that meets the needs and aspirations of the Fijian people as outlined in the new National Development Plan.
Gounder underscored that population dynamics influence multiple aspects of the nation, including economic growth, employment, health, education, and environmental sustainability. He highlighted that crafting a cohesive policy framework to address these issues represents a crucial step toward a brighter future for Fiji. Looking ahead, he called for maintaining the momentum into the policy’s drafting process, ensuring ongoing refinements, and aimed at finalizing the policy soon.
This initiative represents a progressive step towards understanding and responding to population trends, and the collaboration among diverse stakeholders is a hopeful indicator of Fiji’s commitment to addressing its citizens’ needs comprehensively. By focusing on joint efforts and inclusive dialogue, Fiji is positioning itself to make significant strides in enhancing the well-being and sustainability of its communities.
