The Fiji Muslim League (FML) has formed a partnership with a Halal digital technology company to enhance its Halal ecosystem and comply with international Halal standards. This strategic alliance with Malaysia’s Serunai Commerce, facilitated by the Islamic Development Bank’s (IsDB) Reserve Linkage initiative, aims to establish Fiji as a significant player in the burgeoning global Halal economy, expected to reach a valuation of $5 trillion.
In a joint announcement, both FML and Serunai Commerce highlighted the rising demand for Halal-certified products and services locally and globally, noting that Fiji could experience economic growth and sustainable development through advancements in the Halal sector. The partnership intends to strengthen FML and local businesses’ capabilities to satisfy international Halal requirements, thereby creating new trading opportunities within the global Halal market.
Using the Reverse Linkage framework, Serunai Commerce is set to introduce advanced digital technologies that will greatly enhance FML’s ability to manage the Halal certification process. These innovations are expected to streamline operations, boost transparency, and ensure thorough traceability throughout the Halal supply chain.
FML will be able to support local producers more effectively in meeting global Halal standards, ultimately positioning Fiji as a vital participant in the international Halal market. The initiative aims to cultivate trust among consumers and stakeholders, thereby reinforcing the reputation of Halal-certified products originating from Fiji.
Aminuddin Mat Ariff, the IsDB’s lead technical cooperation specialist, emphasized the importance of cross-country knowledge sharing in promoting development, calling this project a pivotal step toward achieving shared prosperity in the region. FML national president Haji Basheer Ahmed remarked that the implementation of these digital systems would transform Halal compliance in Fiji, ensuring that local products meet global quality standards.
The initiative was officially launched last week by Lands and Mineral Resources Minister and Acting Minister for Agriculture Filimoni Vosarogo, who indicated that it would open new opportunities for Fijian farmers and producers to access international markets where certification and traceability are crucial.
