Fiji’s Bold Moves: Tackling Drugs and the Sex Trade

Fiji is willing to implement difficult measures to safeguard vulnerable populations amid concerns that the drug trade is fueling the growth of the sex industry in the country. Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, expressed these sentiments during an interview last week with The Fiji Times, responding to inquiries about the deportation of controversial OnlyFans creators, Bonnie Blue and Annie Knight.

Tabuya pointed out that these individuals were exploiting young people for their own gains and acknowledged that the sex trade is often linked with drug-related activities. She stated, “Where there’s drug trade, there’s sex trade; they go hand in hand.”

The Minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address both issues simultaneously. She highlighted that the responsibility does not rest solely with the Ministry of Defence, led by Minister Pio Tikoduadua, but rather requires a collaborative effort across multiple ministries. “Whenever incidents like this arise, we must come together to mobilize and seek solutions,” she remarked.

In her discussion, Tabuya acknowledged her awareness of the two creators and their problematic backgrounds, especially following the cancellation of their Australian visas. She commended Minister Tikoduadua for his swift and decisive action in deporting them once they arrived in Fiji, stating, “It was a bold action. It was unpopular because a lot of people were speaking against it, but we need to be able to take unpopular steps to protect our most vulnerable.”
