The Ministry of Housing and Local Governance is planning to establish a waste management authority to centralize resources and expertise from municipal councils throughout Fiji. This initiative was announced by Minister Maciu Nalumisa in Parliament, who stated that a centralized body would enhance governance, transparency, and the uniformity of waste management policies nationwide.

Mr. Nalumisa remarked that implementing a comprehensive Waste Management Plan would bring multiple advantages, such as significantly reducing environmental pollution and preserving Fiji’s cultural heritage. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Sigatoka Sand Dunes to maintain its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

He also noted that modern sorting and recycling facilities would help recover valuable resources from the waste stream, contributing to a circular economy. Currently, all waste collected in Fiji goes directly to landfills or dump sites.

The government aims to improve waste management practices to lower greenhouse gas emissions resulting from decomposing waste and dump fires, aligning with national climate change mitigation efforts. Mr. Nalumisa added that the planned improvements are expected to transform the entrance of Sigatoka Town, creating a more attractive gateway for tourists and enhancing their overall experience.

He assured Parliament that the Coalition Government is dedicated to addressing this issue. “Throughout this process, we commit to maintaining transparency, engaging with local communities, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns addressed,” he said.

Mr. Nalumisa described the task as significant but emphasized the potential rewards. He highlighted that the implementation of a modern waste management system would not just be an infrastructure project, but a testament to their commitment to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and the protection of cultural heritage.

The proposed waste management system aims to protect natural and cultural heritage, reduce harmful emissions from waste, and increase community engagement. He stated that government initiatives focused on sustainable development, together with community and stakeholder involvement, would ensure that Sigatoka Town and the broader Western Division benefit from a more efficient and environmentally friendly waste management strategy.

In conclusion, Mr. Nalumisa expressed optimism that this comprehensive approach to waste management would turn significant challenges into opportunities for innovation, job creation, and sustainable growth.
