Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set an ambitious goal to achieve at least 90 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2035. Bobby Naimawi, the Acting Chief Executive of EFL, announced that the company is focusing on identifying and developing sustainable and economically viable projects to meet this target.
One of the key initiatives currently under consideration is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, for which EFL is conducting a feasibility study. Previous research indicated that multiple small hydro-electric projects could be established in the Namosi region, and EFL aims to build on those findings.
Naimawi stated that the next steps will depend on the results of this feasibility study, which is examining three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi and the necessary infrastructure to transport power to major electricity consumption areas.
The feasibility study will analyze the technical feasibility, economic viability, and the environmental and social implications of the proposed hydro-power facilities and their infrastructure. Initiated in 2024, the study is projected to take up to two years, divided into two phases.
Phase 1 will involve scoping and options analysis, exploring various project scenarios, while Phase 2 will focus on a shortlist of project options, conducting comprehensive technical, environmental, and social assessments.
The study will align with international standards, aiming to evaluate the potential impacts of the hydro-power scheme, including its social and economic benefits. Naimawi emphasized that the study will focus on avoiding any flooding in populated or culturally sensitive areas, ensuring that there will be no relocation of existing communities or villages as a result of the hydro-power initiatives.
Consultants, funded by development partners, are conducting the feasibility study in collaboration with key stakeholders to engage those who may be affected by the projects. Naimawi remarked that the findings from this study will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy strategy as outlined in the National Development Plan.
