Fiji’s Bold Move Towards Electoral Inclusivity: Empowering Every Voice

The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has initiated a disability sensitization training aimed at enhancing the accessibility of electoral processes for persons with disabilities. During the opening session, Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa emphasized the importance of true democracy, which includes providing equal participation opportunities for all individuals. She remarked that inclusion requires proactive efforts rather than mere charity.

The training session focused on the integral role of understanding disabilities in elections, clarifying the responsibilities of stakeholders in promoting accessibility, and reviewing polling stations and materials to ensure inclusivity. Mataiciwa affirmed that the FEO is dedicated to making the electoral process fully accessible, empowering individuals with disabilities to participate actively in future elections.

This initiative was in collaboration with the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation and involved participation from representatives of organizations advocating for persons with disabilities, alongside key staff from the FEO.

The momentum toward inclusivity in the electoral process aligns with broader reforms underway in Fiji. For example, the Electoral Law Reform Commission is working to redefine the term “disability” to encompass not just physical impairments but also various factors that affect voters, such as transportation issues and geographical isolation.
