A National Taskforce aimed at combating pornography in Fiji recently held its inaugural meeting, chaired by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica and Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya.
Formed following Cabinet approval earlier this year, the Taskforce brings together key stakeholders from the government, private sector, civil society organizations, and faith-based groups to address the rise of pornographic content and its societal effects, as well as the urgent issue of online child sexual exploitation and abuse.
During the meeting, Tabuya emphasized the need for a collective effort in the battle against online exploitation, noting that this gathering represents a significant step in the commitment to protect children from the threats posed by online pornography.
Mereseini Rakuita, SPC Principal Strategic Lead for Pacific Women and Girls, remarked on the significance of the Taskforce, highlighting the government’s role, regulations, policies, and commitments needed to tackle pornography issues in Fiji and potentially throughout the Pacific region.
The global porn industry generates nearly $97 billion annually, and Fiji ranks among the top 10 countries with the highest internet searches for pornography. Data from an unnamed internet provider indicated that 626.13 terabytes of internet traffic were used for viewing pornography in Fiji during the third quarter of 2023. This amount of data is equivalent to what would be found in 100 million books.
The NTAP Fiji meeting brought together diverse stakeholders to formulate comprehensive strategies against the repercussions of pornography and illegal content, particularly to protect children in the digital realm. The Taskforce will also explore effective methods to promote responsible internet and social media usage.
Through collaboration and shared efforts, this Taskforce aims to establish a nationwide initiative to ensure the well-being of all Fijians and cultivate a healthier society.
