Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced that the Coalition Government is committed to fighting pornography and is considering the possibility of banning certain websites if deemed necessary.
During a recent parliamentary update regarding the National Taskforce to Address Pornography, he emphasized the importance of international cooperation and strengthening legal measures to safeguard children from online sexual exploitation.
Kamikamica highlighted discussions on current child protection laws and the need for more comprehensive policies to tackle the ongoing challenges presented by the digital landscape. He revealed that three working groups have been established, each tasked with specific objectives aligned with the taskforce’s overall aims.
The first working group, which is chaired by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, will focus on policy, legislation, governance, and criminal justice. The second working group, led by the Online Safety Commission, will concentrate on survivor support, empowerment, society, and cultural issues. The third group, chaired by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji, will address responses from the industry and technology.
“To ensure the effectiveness of our initiatives, the taskforce will implement robust mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation,” stated Mr. Kamikamica. He added that feedback channels would be established for the community to participate in the government’s efforts, ensuring responsiveness to citizens’ needs.
The National Taskforce is scheduled to meet again this month, where the working groups will share their findings, and discussions will continue on addressing pornography issues in Fiji comprehensively. Kamikamica reiterated the government’s serious commitment to these efforts, even mentioning the potential for banning specific sites if needed.
