Fiji’s Bold Move: New Policy Paves Path for Child Development!

The Fijian government has recently launched the Fiji National Early Childhood Development Policy, focusing on the nutrition and health of children during their crucial first 1,000 days. Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu emphasized this initiative during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting held in Tonga, highlighting the importance of ensuring children’s safety and protection for their lifelong well-being.

Dr. Lalabalavu stated, “We must safeguard our children from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect, and conflict. This is the essence of what this Policy represents for Fiji.” He affirmed that the welfare and needs of children are a top priority for the nation, ensuring they receive adequate care, stimulation, and opportunities for early learning in a nurturing environment.

A significant aspect of the policy’s development involved the formation of a multisectoral National Early Childhood Development Advisory Committee, which was established in 2022. This committee includes representatives from various government ministries, the University of the South Pacific, Fiji Red Cross, Frank Hilton Organisation, the judiciary, and several faith-based groups.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the advisory committee facilitated an initial consultation forum where experts and policy specialists analyzed the current early childhood landscape in Fiji, particularly for children aged 0 to 8 years, and identified key policy directions necessary for improvement.

“This critical step has helped in shaping the Fiji ECD policy, which aims to enhance the sector and improve outcomes for approximately 88,000 children aged 0 to 8 in Fiji.”
