Fiji’s Bold Move: Harsher Drug Penalties on the Horizon

The Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill in Fiji is set to introduce tougher penalties to tackle the nation’s drug problem, as stated by Assistant Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure. Speaking at the opening of a workshop for the Bill, Mr. Vakalalabure highlighted the necessity of robust legislation to support the legal system and aid enforcement agencies in their fight against drug-related issues.

“We will be implementing some severe penalties as a deterrent, considering the overwhelming amount of drugs present in Fiji,” he noted. Although specific details of the penalties have yet to be revealed, he assured that consultations are ongoing, and significant punitive measures will be included.

Mr. Vakalalabure stressed that the consultation process is vital and that collaboration with international partners will strengthen anti-drug initiatives. He mentioned that the Coalition Government is eager to advance the Bill as quickly as possible.

“We are conducting essential consultations to ensure all voices are heard, as this issue impacts everyone. Our neighboring countries, Australia and New Zealand, are fully supportive and are collaborating with the ministry and stakeholders in our efforts against drug trafficking,” he stated.

The Government hopes to have the Bill approved either in the upcoming November or December parliamentary session or by early next year at the latest.
