The Cabinet has approved the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, which will receive financial backing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF is the largest multilateral trust fund aimed at helping developing countries invest in environmental initiatives. It also supports the execution of key international environmental agreements related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.
Fiji has been granted this project to reassess its priority biodiversity focus areas as outlined in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2020 – 2025, ensuring alignment with the new biodiversity targets set under the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The initiative will employ a comprehensive approach that includes collaboration across government sectors and consultations with vital stakeholders such as government partners, civil society, non-governmental organizations, regional organizations, resource owners, and academic institutions.
The project is expected to be completed by 28 February 2025.
