Mosese Bulitavu, a Member of Parliament from the G9 group, has expressed his support for the release of George Speight, the civilian coup leader who was granted presidential immunity. Bulitavu is the first G9 MP to comment on Speight’s release, which followed a review by the Mercy Commission.
Bulitavu stated, “He (Speight) has served his time! We need to move away from our past and through reconciliation seek restoration.” He emphasized that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is at the forefront of the reconciliation process, and he views Speight’s release as a significant step forward.
The MP further remarked that only a few politicians who have faced incarceration can truly understand why a rehabilitated prisoner deserves a fresh start. He added, “For us outside the walls of prison, we need to unlock the second prison, which is society’s view on the crimes committed, and accept them back after they have undergone rehabilitation through the Fiji Corrections Service.”
