The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Sivendra Michael, announced that the government intends to review the current Litter Act of 2008 and the Environmental Management Act to address plastic pollution in Fiji. Speaking at the Fiji National Symposium on Plastic Pollution, Dr. Michael emphasized that the introduction of container deposit legislation could significantly mitigate the irresponsible disposal of plastic items such as bottles and containers.
“There are considerable plans led by the Prime Minister to reassess the current legislation and implement new regulations for the Litter Act,” Dr. Michael stated. He pointed out that the Litter Act 2008 serves as a foundational law but lacks subsequent regulations, highlighting the need for development in this area.
Additionally, Dr. Michael discussed the existing framework under the Environmental Management Act, which encompasses waste and pollution control through waste disposal and recycling permits. While acknowledging that these regulations are in place, he noted that they could be further enhanced. Introducing container deposit regulations is seen as a step toward improving the management of plastic waste entering the country.
