The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) has been launched as a strategic initiative to assist Fiji in addressing the complex challenges that pose risks to its sovereignty and stability. Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua introduced the NSDR at an event held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. He emphasized that the contemporary security environment is characterized by issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical pressures, necessitating an agile and proactive response from Fiji.
A significant aspect of the review is the advocacy for a collaborative approach to security that involves both the government and society as a whole. Tikoduadua pointed out that while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force have crucial roles, it is essential for them to collaborate with other government entities, civil society, and the private sector. He reiterated that national security is a collective responsibility that affects everyone in the nation.
The Editorial Board that provided their expertise for this review includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. The NSDR will utilize primary data gathered from consultations with communities, facilitated by both the government and civil society.
