Fiji’s Bold Move: A New Dawn for Children’s Development

The Fijian government has recently adopted the Fiji National Early Childhood Development Policy, which places a strong emphasis on the health and nutrition of children, particularly during their crucial first 1,000 days. Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu made this announcement at the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga.

During his speech, he highlighted the importance of ensuring children’s safety and protection as a vital component of promoting lifelong health. “We must protect our children from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect, and conflict. This is what the policy represents for Fiji,” Dr. Lalabalavu stated.

He emphasized that children represent the future of Fiji and the Pacific region, and their welfare must be prioritized on the national agenda. This includes providing proper care, stimulation, and opportunities for early learning in a nurturing environment.

A significant aspect of developing this policy involved the formation of a multisectoral National Early Childhood Development Advisory Committee, established in 2022. This committee comprises representatives from various ministries, including Health, Education, Finance, and Women, Children and Social Protection, along with institutions like the University of the South Pacific, Fiji Red Cross, Frank Hilton Organisation, and several faith-based organizations.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that initial consultations with experts and policy specialists were critical in assessing the current early childhood situation in Fiji, particularly for children aged 0 to 8 years. These discussions informed key policy directions necessary for the country’s early childhood development efforts.

He concluded by stating that the Fiji ECD policy is an important step that promises to deliver significant benefits across the early childhood development sector, ultimately improving outcomes for approximately 88,000 children in Fiji aged 0 to 8 years.
