Tourism Fiji has introduced the “Bin it or Bag it” campaign aimed at fostering a litter-free environment as part of its sustainable tourism practices. This initiative arises from discussions at the 2023 Fiji Tourism Convention and is supported by nearly 15 partners, including major hotels and resorts, which have contributed over FJ$100,000 in funding and resources.
The campaign encourages both residents and tourists to dispose of their waste responsibly, either by using bins or storing waste in bags for future disposal. It aims to create a community-driven movement focused on environmental conservation.
Tourism Fiji is partnering with local artists to promote the campaign, which features a memorable jingle and vibrant illustrations, including a character named ‘Kasikasi’ that advocates for responsible waste management. Additionally, reusable bags emblazoned with the campaign’s slogan will be distributed across various locations in Fiji.
Brent Hill, the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji, emphasized the shared responsibility in protecting the environment. He stated, “We are excited to launch the ‘Bin it or Bag it’ campaign with our committed partners. This initiative reflects our dedication to sustainable tourism and highlights our collective duty to safeguard Fiji’s environment. We urge all Fijians and visitors to adopt the ‘Bin it or Bag it’ approach.”
The campaign will be promoted through multiple media outlets and aligns with national sustainability initiatives in collaboration with government ministries. Srishti Narayan, the Chief Marketing Officer, expressed hope that the initiative will bring together the community, industry, and government in a united effort towards environmental conservation.
