Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed today that the Fijian government is dedicated to ensuring that all citizens have access to clean and affordable electricity. As part of an ambitious initiative, the government is exploring innovative technologies, particularly Micro Modular Reactors (MMRs), to enhance energy generation capabilities while reducing costs and emissions.
In his statement, Rabuka emphasized the need for creative solutions that leverage the latest technology to improve the quality of life for Fijians. The government is particularly interested in a collaborative project involving Lloyds Register of London, Deployable Energy of Houston Texas, and Seatransport of Queensland. This initiative focuses on incorporating MMR technology into the 73-meter Stern Landing Vessel, the Ocean of Peace, which the government plans to acquire.
If proven effective in demonstrating cost savings and emission reductions, the MMR technology will enable the replacement of current diesel engines, allowing the vessel to operate without refueling for up to ten years. This shift not only promises to lower electricity costs significantly but also aims to provide emergency power supply capabilities to communities across Fiji, enhancing energy security and sustainability.
Rabuka also highlighted the pressing economic challenge posed by the reliance on diesel imports for power generation, asserting that innovative solutions, including MMRs, appear viable in addressing both cost and environmental concerns. The planned transitions toward safer nuclear technologies signal a transformative step for the Fijian energy sector.
