Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set a notable goal to transition to clean and affordable energy solutions, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to come from renewable sources by 2035. Acting EFL Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi indicated that the company is in the process of identifying and developing several economically viable and sustainable projects to reach this target.
One key initiative is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, which EFL is currently exploring through a feasibility study. Past assessments have indicated that multiple small hydro-electric schemes could be implemented in the Namosi region, and EFL is building on this previous research.
Naimawi mentioned that the next steps will depend on the feasibility study’s outcomes. This study is examining three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, as well as the necessary high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure to connect these sites to larger electricity demand hubs.
The feasibility study aims to evaluate the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social implications of the proposed hydro-power facilities and related infrastructure. Launched in 2024, the study is projected to take up to two years, divided into two phases:
Phase 1 involves a scoping and options analysis to explore various project scenarios, while Phase 2 will focus on a selected shortlist of project options that will undergo comprehensive technical, environmental, and social evaluations.
The feasibility study will adhere to international standards, assessing the potential impacts of the hydro-power scheme on local populations and culturally sensitive areas. Naimawi emphasized that the study aims to prevent any displacement of existing communities as a consequence of the hydro-power projects.
Consultants funded by development partners are conducting the feasibility study, collaborating closely with key stakeholders to engage with communities that may be affected before any project development. The findings from this feasibility study will be critical in shaping the renewable energy strategy for Fiji as outlined in the National Development Plan.
