Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific region during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government officials meeting held in Nadi. Phillip Hereniko, the director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, delivered a keynote address highlighting this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” which underscores the significance of young people in shaping the region’s future.
Hereniko stated that Fiji has been a leader in youth development initiatives, emphasizing that their commitment extends beyond mere policies and programs, forming a fundamental value within the nation’s agenda. He detailed recent actions taken by the Ministry, such as the review of youth development policies and legislation, the formation of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the launch of The Youth Education Sex App aimed at informing youths about sexual reproductive health services.
He also expressed appreciation for the support from UNFPA and UNICEF, stressing the need for inclusive youth development that ensures all young individuals, regardless of their background, gender, or location, are supported. Hereniko noted the positive impact of Youth Festivals and symposiums in uniting young Fijians from various backgrounds, enabling them to celebrate diversity and articulate their hopes and challenges.
As the Senior Officials Youth Meeting progresses, Hereniko conveyed Fiji’s desire to build upon previous achievements, learn from collective experiences, and devise innovative strategies to empower future generations. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, resource sharing, and utilizing the distinct strengths of each nation to foster a Pacific region where every young person can achieve their full potential.
