As Fiji prepares to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made a passionate appeal for all Fijians to unite and take action against this critical issue. In his national address, Rabuka underscored that GBV transcends communities and is a significant concern that requires a sustained commitment beyond the designated campaign period.
He emphasized the necessity of collective action, stating, “Gender-based violence is an issue that demands our collective action—not just during these 16 days, but every day of the year, every year.” The Prime Minister highlighted the profound impact violence has on families, communities, and the nation’s overall progress, articulating that violence undermines stability and hinders societal growth.
“Violence robs families of their stability, communities of their strength, and the nation of its potential. Prevention must go hand in hand with justice, where women and girls are safe everywhere, and justice is a reality—not just a promise,” Rabuka added.
Echoing this sentiment, Rakesh Chand, Deputy Director of Community-Oriented Policing, has urged parents to remain vigilant as the festive season approaches, a time when incidents of domestic violence are known to rise. He encouraged families to cultivate safer environments during this period.
This year’s campaign theme, “From Prevention to Justice, Ending Violence, Impunity Against Women and Girls in All Spaces,” aims to enhance initiatives that prevent violence while ensuring that those who perpetrate such acts are held accountable, thereby creating safer spaces for women and girls.
Rabuka’s address serves as a strong rallying cry for citizens, institutions, and communities to unite in the fight against GBV. He concluded with a hopeful message, asserting, “Ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can create a society where women and girls can live without fear, and justice is not just a promise but a reality.”
The campaign kicks off tomorrow, encouraging Fijians to engage in activities and discussions designed to foster meaningful change in addressing gender-based violence.
