Fiji has launched its National Development Plan (NDP) for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, which Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad describes as a realistic roadmap rather than an unrealistic aspiration. He emphasizes that the NDP builds on the inherent strengths and potential of Fijians, aiming to break boundaries and explore new avenues for growth.

In a detailed message within the 217-page document, Professor Prasad outlines the government’s specific achievement targets for the short-term (three and five years) as well as a long-term vision for the next 25 years. He states that the Vision is designed to chart a path toward transforming Fiji into a prosperous and sustainable nation.

To achieve this vision, he stresses the importance of governance reforms, a strict stance against corruption, and a commitment to peace, security, and stability. The NDP is structured in 11 chapters, detailing the government’s socio-economic targets under three main pillars: economic resilience, people empowerment, and good governance.

A significant focus of the economic strategy is on enhancing private sector participation across various sectors to drive growth. The government plans to eliminate barriers to private investments, create an efficient investment environment, reduce bureaucratic obstacles, address labor shortages, and improve land access.

Additionally, the NDP emphasizes the support of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), aiming to enhance their contribution to the economy through improved access to financing and support for transitioning businesses into the formal economy.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, in his foreword, urged all Fijians to seize this opportunity to craft a vibrant and inclusive future. He highlighted the NDP as a “people’s plan” that identifies strategic priorities in economic resilience, people empowerment, and good governance. Rabuka assured that over the next three years, the government is committed to delivering tangible solutions, including access to clean drinking water, improved infrastructure, upgraded healthcare facilities, enhanced law enforcement, and quality education for all citizens.
