The Assistant Minister for Home Affairs, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure, emphasizes the urgent need for robust legislation to aid enforcement officers in tackling the illegal drug trade in Fiji. Speaking at the opening of the Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill Workshop, Vakalalabure highlighted that the new legislation is intended to address the current drug issues not only in Fiji but also within the region and worldwide.
He pointed out that the ongoing threat posed by illegal drug trafficking significantly impacts national security, affecting communities, families, and society as a whole. Vakalalabure noted that Fiji’s strategic location in the Pacific makes it a prime target for drug trafficking organizations looking to exploit its vulnerabilities.
The workshop is set to include a presentation of the Counter Narcotics Bureau Structure and Outcome Report during a Legal Review Workshop scheduled for April 2024, which will cover various acts related to drug control and manufacturing. Additionally, there will be discussions on the progress and future direction of the Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the newly established Counter Narcotics Bureau will spearhead national efforts to disrupt and dismantle drug networks that threaten Fiji’s way of life. Vakalalabure stated that the Bureau’s main focus will be on breaking the cycle of illegal agriculture, manufacturing, sale, and export of drugs and psychotropic substances.
Furthermore, he mentioned that strong intelligence and enforcement strategies will be essential in effectively combatting drug trafficking. This workshop is part of a government initiative to enhance public trust in defense and security institutions while also reinforcing Fiji’s borders and security measures.
