Fiji’s audio-visual industry holds significant potential for economic growth across various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and local services. This was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica during the Film Fiji Industry Connect event in Suva.

Kamikamica pointed out that Film Fiji has greatly impacted the nation’s economy. In the last financial year, Fiji attracted film, television, and documentary projects from 11 countries, generating approximately $255 million in economic activity. Moreover, these productions created nearly 1,300 jobs for Fijians and involved 282 local service providers, demonstrating the extensive influence of the audio-visual sector on the economy.

He expressed a desire for Fiji to host more international film productions, similar to the popular reality show “Love Island”, while also fostering opportunities for local filmmakers. The government acknowledges the substantial transformative potential of the audio-visual industry and is dedicated to establishing a supportive environment for its expansion. Efforts such as collaboration with the Immigration Department to streamline work permit processes are indicative of this commitment.

Kamikamica reiterated the government’s focus on fostering growth and development, aiming to create an atmosphere in which local filmmakers can excel and push the boundaries of their creativity.

This positive push for the audio-visual industry underscores Fiji’s commitment to economic diversification and job creation, which can have long-lasting benefits for the community and contribute to a vibrant cultural landscape.

In summary, Fiji’s strategy to enhance its audio-visual industry is set to not only boost economic activity but also create opportunities for local talent, underscoring a hopeful and proactive approach to development.
