Fiji’s Approach to Juvenile Justice Raises Eyebrows

Fiji does not impose life sentences on children who violate the law, according to Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga. Addressing concerns about young offenders, Mr. Turaga stated that the maximum detention for juveniles is two years unless otherwise decided by the courts.

Mr. Turaga highlighted the legal measures in place to protect children and address the severity of certain crimes. “There are laws that protect our children,” he said, emphasizing the importance of understanding the various factors, including psychological aspects and home situations, that influence young offenders.

Clarifying the legal situation in Fiji, Mr. Turaga reiterated that life sentences are not imposed on children. He noted that while public opinion is significant, the judiciary holds the responsibility to adjudicate such cases appropriately. “It’s crucial to look at the facts before making comments,” he said, underscoring the court’s authority in these matters.

The issue of young offenders was brought to light by Inspector Unaisi Mateiwai of the Fiji Police Force’s Sexual Offence and Child Abuse and Scholastic Crime Stoppers Program during a recent Christian rally in Rewa. Inspector Mateiwai revealed that Fiji’s youngest sex offenders included a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl.
