The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to either resign or step aside while an investigation into serious allegations against her is underway.
In a recent statement, Seruiratu expressed his grave concerns regarding the inquiry prompted by a complaint made last month by Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa to Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. The complaint reportedly involves allegations of office abuse, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses, which he deemed severe.
Seruiratu emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency and public trust in governmental institutions, arguing that Malimali’s continuation in her role would compromise both. He questioned how a figure tasked with combatting corruption could remain in her position while facing such serious claims. He urged the Judicial Services Commission, responsible for Malimali’s appointment, to take action and suspend or remove her to help restore the integrity of both FICAC and itself.
These developments underline the vital importance of accountability and integrity in positions of power, particularly in institutions designed to uphold ethical standards. As the investigation proceeds, there is hope that the integrity of Fiji’s anti-corruption efforts can be preserved and strengthened, reinforcing public confidence in the nation’s institutions.
In summary, Seruiratu’s call to action reflects a broader commitment to transparency and accountability, which are crucial for the trust and effectiveness of public institutions.
