Fiji’s Anti-Corruption Agency Asserts Independence Amid Controversy

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its independence, stating that there has been no interference from the Government. In an official statement, FICAC emphasized that neither the Government nor any political parties have interfered with its investigations or ongoing cases, and that it strictly adheres to due processes.

FICAC referenced a previous press release from March, clarifying that any past interference was attributed to former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, rather than the current Coalition Government. They also mentioned a complaint made by Sayed-Khaiyum to Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere regarding former Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai in April 2024, although the outcome of that complaint remains unclear.

The commission acknowledged it has experienced significant changes in the past year, including leadership transitions and staff turnover, which have impacted the progression of its investigation cases. Despite these challenges, FICAC is committed to resolving its pending cases and vows to maintain its independence as mandated by law.
