The Electoral Law Reform Commission in Fiji is working to redefine “disability” within the electoral process, expanding the term to encompass not just physical impairments but also various factors that impede individuals’ ability to vote. According to Justice Daniel Fatiaki, chair of the commission, challenges such as transportation issues, geographic isolation, and complicated voting procedures will now be recognized as disabilities affecting voter participation.
Justice Fatiaki pointed out the broader implications of the term “disadvantaged,” stating that barriers to accessing polling stations should be viewed as significant obstacles. The commission is dedicated to improving accessibility, which may include increasing the number of polling locations, utilizing mobile voting units, or enhancing postal voting options.
Moreover, the needs of voters with mental disabilities are also under consideration. One suggestion from Justice Fatiaki entails allowing voters to use slips of paper for identification to help alleviate the stress of relying solely on memory, a task that can often be daunting during elections.
