Fiji’s Alarming Suicide Statistics: A Call for Change

The Fiji Police Force has reported 63 cases of suicide for 2024, a slight decrease from 66 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been 44 attempted suicide cases, down from 47 in the previous year. These statistics cover the period from January 1 to August 22.

Among the reported cases, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under the age of 18. The highest number of cases was recorded among those aged 60 and above, with 19 suicides and two attempted suicides noted. A significant pattern identified in the data is that 50 of the suicide cases involved males, indicating a higher prevalence of suicide among men.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed concern over these statistics, highlighting the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding to address the pressing social issues faced by society. He urged community leaders to assist in changing the narrative surrounding mental health.

Raikaci emphasized the need for a supportive environment, stating, “We need to nurture a more understanding and supportive culture of acceptance and create safe spaces to talk.” He also pointed out the rising challenge of cyberbullying, calling on Fijians to show more empathy in both physical and virtual interactions.

Factors contributing to suicide and attempted suicide cases have been linked to spousal and family disputes, relationship issues, stress, and health problems. In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day 2024, the theme is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
