Between 2016 and 2021, the Fiji Police Force documented a total of 1,276 suicides and attempted suicides. This translates to an average of 212 incidents each year, with about half resulting in fatalities.
Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu provided this information during a parliamentary session on Friday, addressing inquiries regarding the ministry’s suicide prevention initiatives.
Dr. Lalabalavu noted that 2019 saw the highest number of suicide and attempted suicide cases, with 244 recorded incidents. He mentioned that the Western Division consistently reported the most cases over the six-year period.
He emphasized the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide, advocating for a transformation in how society views this intricate issue. Dr. Lalabalavu called for moving away from silence and stigma towards a culture of openness, understanding, and support.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 800,000 individuals worldwide take their own lives each year.
The minister urged everyone to engage in conversations about suicide and its prevention, stating that every dialogue, regardless of its size, helps foster a supportive and understanding community.
“By initiating these essential discussions, we can dismantle barriers, promote awareness, and foster a culture of support,” he added, encouraging dialogue to take place in various community settings, including churches, mosques, sports fields, and social gatherings.
