The Fiji Police Force has reported 63 cases of suicide from January 1 to August 22, 2024, a slight decrease compared to 66 cases recorded during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been 44 attempted suicide cases this year, down from 47 in the previous year.
Among these cases, eight suicides and five attempted suicides involved individuals under the age of 18. The highest number of cases was reported among those aged over 60, with nineteen suicides and two attempts. The statistics also reveal a concerning trend, as 50 of the reported suicide cases involved males.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed alarm at the current statistics, citing the escalating social issues facing society. He emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding within the community. Raikaci urged community leaders to play a role in improving the situation and suggested that creating supportive environments where people can share their feelings is vital.
He highlighted the rise of cyberbullying as an additional challenge, calling for greater compassion in both personal interactions and online engagements. Various factors, such as spousal and family disputes, relationship issues, stress, and health problems, have been identified as contributing to both suicide and attempted suicide cases.
As World Suicide Prevention Day approaches, the theme for 2024 is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
