The Fiji Police Force has released alarming suicide statistics for the period from January 1 to January 22, showing 63 cases, a slight decrease from 66 during the same timeframe last year. Attempted suicide cases during this period are reported at 44, compared to 47 in the previous year.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed deep concern over these numbers and emphasized the need to address the social issues facing society today. He highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding within communities.

Among the cases reported, there were eight suicides and five attempted suicides involving individuals under 18 years old. The highest incidence was recorded among those aged 60 and above, with 19 suicides and two attempted suicides. The statistics indicate that males are more affected, with 50 reported cases.

Commissioner Raikaci urged community leaders to assist in changing the narrative surrounding mental health and suicide. He called for the cultivation of a supportive community environment where discussions can take place openly and safely.

Raikaci also pointed out the modern challenges posed by cyberbullying and encouraged Fijians to be more compassionate, even online. The police have linked several causes to incidents of suicide and attempted suicide, including spousal and family disputes, relationship problems, stress, and illness.

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative” with an emphasis on initiating conversations about mental health.
