Fiji’s Alarming Rise in HIV Cases: What’s Behind the Surge?

The global trend regarding Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is on the decline, but Fiji is experiencing a different scenario.

Health and Medical Services Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu addressed this issue in Parliament on Wednesday. Opposition MP Virendra Lal inquired about the ministry’s strategies to tackle the rising HIV cases in Fiji. He urged the Minister to detail the specific actions being implemented to address the increase in drug-related offenses and the rise in HIV cases among young people.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that Fiji is projected to be the second fastest-growing country for HIV cases in the Asia Pacific region, surpassed only by the Philippines. He indicated that the government has identified the use of injectable drugs as a significant issue within the nation.

Last month, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported 552 confirmed HIV cases from January to June. Of the 525 cases identified, 15 percent were linked to injectable drug use, marking a record high for Fiji.

In response to these challenges, the ministry is taking steps to enhance its approach to HIV related to drug use. Efforts are being made to improve access to HIV testing and treatment services throughout Fiji in a more decentralized manner. Additionally, the government has allocated $200,000 in the current financial year specifically aimed at responding to the HIV crisis.
