The global situation regarding Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is improving, yet Fiji is facing a contrasting trend. This was emphasized by Health and Medical Services Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu during a recent Parliamentary session.
In response to inquiries from Opposition MP Virendra Lal about the government’s approach to the rise in HIV cases, Dr. Lalabalavu revealed alarming statistics. He indicated that Fiji is projected to become the second fastest-growing country for HIV cases in the Asia Pacific, following the Philippines.
The Minister cited the increasing prevalence of injectable drug use as a crucial factor contributing to the HIV surge in the country. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported a total of 552 HIV cases between January and June, with 15 percent of those being attributed to injectable drug users, marking an unprecedented situation for Fiji.
In light of these issues, Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the ministry is enhancing its HIV response, particularly concerning drug use. Efforts are underway to improve HIV testing and treatment services throughout Fiji in a more decentralized manner. The government has allocated $200,000 for the current financial year to bolster the HIV response initiatives.
