Fiji’s Alarming HIV Surge: A Call for Community Action

Jone Usamate, an Opposition Member of Parliament, expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in HIV cases in Fiji, calling it a wake-up call that necessitates immediate government action through a comprehensive community strategy.

Recent statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate there have been 522 new HIV cases reported this year, representing a 33 percent increase compared to 2023. Among these cases, 85 were linked to injectable drug use.

Usamate pointed out that youth are particularly at risk and emphasized the need for effective engagement in constructive activities to steer them away from addiction to hard drugs and risky sexual behaviors that can elevate the risk of contracting HIV. He noted a concerning trend where young people are progressing from using suki to marijuana and then moving on to even more dangerous substances.

He suggested that some countries have adopted syringe services programs that provide clean needles and safe disposal options to combat the spread of HIV. However, he also acknowledged that such initiatives might be misinterpreted as promoting drug use.

Usamate stressed that while these measures are essential, they are reactive and that stronger proactive efforts must be undertaken not only by the government but also by communities, religious organizations, families, and schools.

“We must unite as a nation to fight against this epidemic,” Usamate concluded.
