Fiji is grappling with a serious health crisis, as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) now make up 80 percent of all deaths in the country and account for 40 percent of premature fatalities, according to Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services.

These concerning figures reflect a global trend, with the World Health Organization (WHO) noting that NCDs are responsible for 71 percent of global deaths, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries like Fiji. The United Nations further reports that 85 percent of premature deaths from NCDs occur in these regions.

In Fiji, circulatory diseases, diabetes, and cancer are the leading causes of death, impacting individuals of all ages. The Republic of Fiji Vital Statistics Report from 2016 to 2021 highlights NCDs as the primary cause of death across all demographics.

The financial strain on Fiji’s healthcare system is significant, with costs related to NCDs and associated disabilities estimated at 591 million Fijian dollars in 2019.

The primary risk factors contributing to this crisis are well identified: poor dietary habits, tobacco consumption, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol intake. Dr. Lalabalavu stresses that these factors can be changed.

Other countries have successfully reduced their NCD rates through comprehensive strategies that Fiji could implement. For example, Finland’s nationwide salt reduction campaign has led to a notable decrease in hypertension, while Australia’s strict tobacco control measures, including plain packaging and high taxes, have significantly lowered smoking rates. Mexico’s introduction of a sugar tax resulted in a 7.6 percent decrease in sugary drink consumption within two years.

Fiji’s Wellness Division is actively collecting important data to inform health promotion and preventive initiatives. However, tackling the NCD epidemic will require a unified effort, robust policy changes, and increased public awareness.

Making healthier choices today is essential for ensuring a healthier future.
