Recent statistics indicate that around 72 percent of children in Fiji have faced some form of violence throughout their lives. This alarming figure encompasses instances of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, with many occurrences happening within homes, schools, and communities—environments that should be inherently safe and nurturing.
Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, highlighted the urgent need for education and awareness regarding effective parenting techniques, particularly for younger parents who might lack support from extended family members. Addressing a recent incident of violence against young children that circulated on social media, Kiran emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to developing programs focused on good parenting and educating the community about what constitutes violence against children and measures to prevent it.
“Every child in Fiji deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear and harm,” Kiran stated. The Ministry is intensifying efforts to combat child violence by strengthening reporting mechanisms. They encourage the public to utilize the 24/7 child helpline (1325) to report abuse cases, assuring confidentiality and prompt action to protect victims while prosecuting offenders.
Additionally, Kiran mentioned that the Ministry is expanding counseling services, providing safe shelters, and collaborating with NGOs to offer rehabilitation programs for children and their families affected by violence. She also stressed the responsibility of the community in sharing sensitive content on social media, urging individuals to refrain from circulating such material that could further traumatize victims. Instead, she called for direct reporting of incidents to authorities for immediate intervention.
Kiran appealed to families, community leaders, educators, and all citizens to unite with the Ministry in fostering a safer environment for all children in Fiji. “Let us be their voice and their shield, ensuring their well-being and future. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a society where every child is protected, valued, and cherished,” she concluded.
In summary, the Ministry is taking decisive steps to address the critical issue of child violence in Fiji. By enhancing education on parenting, promoting timely reporting of abuse, and expanding support services, there is hope for creating a safer future for the nation’s children. With collective community effort, positive change is achievable, fostering an environment where children can thrive without fear.
