Fiji Airports is navigating significant financial challenges as it plans to upgrade its infrastructure, particularly concerning government-owned facilities. The organization faces constraints due to Nadi International Airport being the only profitable site among its 14 airports including Labasa Airport, which has experienced delays in development.
Mesake Nawari, the CEO of Fiji Airports, clarified that there are no “free capital” resources for financing the extensive and necessary infrastructure improvements over the next 25 years. His comments arise amid questions regarding the ongoing delays in the development of Labasa Airport, which is under the management of Fiji Airports similar to the other government-owned facilities.
In a positive development, a temporary terminal at Labasa Airport has recently opened a week ahead of schedule, benefiting from extended working hours during its construction. This interim facility, which handles a daily average of 200 passengers, has a seating capacity of only 70, potentially leading to congestion during peak times. To mitigate overflow, additional temporary structures have been erected outside.
The temporary terminal is part of an $8 million plan to enhance services at the airport, with preliminary works for a permanent terminal expected to commence shortly and be completed within 18 months. This permanent structure will increase seating capacity to 138 and include a separate arrivals hall—significantly improving the travel experience for future passengers.
The long and gradual upgrade of Labasa Airport has faced numerous hurdles including funding constraints and setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these recent advancements symbolize a commitment to modernizing Fiji’s airport infrastructure, which could eventually enhance tourism opportunities and stimulate economic growth across the region.
In summary, while Fiji Airports grapples with financial limitations, the developments at Labasa Airport reflect a hopeful trajectory for the future of aviation in Fiji, aiming to provide improved facilities for residents and visitors alike.
