Fiji Airports’ chief executive officer, Mesake Nawari, has expressed concerns regarding the financial strain on the organization as it endeavors to develop infrastructure across government-owned airports. Currently, Nadi International Airport serves as the sole profitable facility under Fiji Airports, which is tasked with managing a total of 14 airports, including Labasa Airport.
Nawari noted that the company does not possess “free capital” to fund the extensive 25-year infrastructure development program aimed at improving the condition of these government airports. His remarks come in the wake of inquiries about the delays in Labasa Airport’s development and the profitability of other government-owned airports.
Significantly, a temporary terminal at Labasa Airport opened a week ahead of schedule, a completion made possible by extended operational hours aimed at ensuring efficiency. This temporary facility will serve as a precursor to an $8 million project for a permanent terminal, which is set to begin construction soon and expected to enhance passenger services. While the temporary terminal has a limited seating capacity of 70 and can accommodate around 200 passengers daily, the new terminal is projected to house 138 seats and a separate arrivals area. Construction for the permanent terminal is estimated to be completed in 18 months.
The long-awaited upgrade of Labasa Airport has faced challenges over decades due to funding constraints and delays exacerbated by the pandemic. However, this current initiative marks a hopeful step towards improving airport infrastructure in Fiji, which is expected to ultimately uplift the local communities and potentially stimulate tourism as facilities modernize.
In summary, as Fiji Airports navigates financial limitations while pushing forward with its development goals, the upgrades at Labasa Airport and other facilities signal a commitment to enhancing passenger experience and overall airport functionality in the region. The progress may serve as a catalyst for future growth, raising optimism for the economic prospects in Fiji’s aviation sector.
