Fiji’s Agriculture Revolution: A Call for Innovative Entrepreneurs

Fiji requires more innovative and resilient agri-entrepreneurs, according to Joann Young, Assistant Representative to Fiji from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Young recently met with several young farmers who showcased “exceptional innovation and resilience” in their agricultural methods, highlighting the potential within Fiji’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and their potential impact on the local economy and community.

Over the past two years, the FAO has worked closely with the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communications, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture, to seek ways to support agribusinesses in Fiji. They’ve also collaborated with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) to leverage its strong connections in the private sector.

” agriculture is an essential part of Fiji’s economy, offering job opportunities, ensuring food security, and playing a significant role in the nation’s GDP,” Young stated at the recent launch of the 2024 Agri-Innovate Business Plan competition.

However, she pointed out that MSMEs in agriculture face challenges such as limited market access, a lack of technical expertise, and insufficient financial resources. The agri-innovate competition aims to tackle these issues by providing a platform for MSMEs to present their innovative ideas, products, and services, while gaining access to the support and resources necessary for success.

“By nurturing and supporting these entrepreneurs, we can unlock the full potential of our agriculture sector, stimulate economic growth, and create a more sustainable and resilient future for Fiji,” Young concluded.
