Fiji’s Agricultural Revolution: Cocoa and Coffee Industries Set for a Comeback

The Minister for Agriculture, Vatimi Rayalu, has made it clear that revitalizing Fiji’s cocoa and coffee industries stands at the forefront of his agenda. He emphasized the importance of not just growing cocoa and coffee, but also focusing on the complete value chain, from planting to processing, to boost the economy and create employment opportunities.

Rayalu mentioned that the Ministry is committed to its initiative known as the Commercial Agriculture program, which aims to enhance agro-processing. This program encourages both local and foreign investors to establish processing operations in Fiji, thus enhancing the entire agricultural sector’s productivity.

A significant milestone has already been achieved with the initiation of a 300-acre cocoa planting project in Nasautoka, Wainibuka. Rayalu expressed optimism that this is merely the beginning of building a sustainable cocoa industry in Fiji. He noted the current challenge of inadequate product availability, despite substantial market demand for cocoa and coffee.

The Ministry has identified regions such as Cakaudrove and Taveuni for coffee production, as well as Bua for potential cocoa and tea cultivation. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reassure stakeholders that agriculture in Fiji is poised for significant transformation and growth.

Historically, Fiji’s cocoa industry was once a strong contributor to its economy, generating around $22 million annually. Lessons from the past underscore the importance of moving beyond primary production towards value-added processing to avoid repeating previous failures.

Rayalu’s vision is straightforward: “plant more, process more, export more,” indicating a clear pathway for agricultural transformation that emphasizes rural development and economic growth. This commitment from the Coalition Government aims to empower Fijian farmers, allowing them to partake in a larger, more lucrative agricultural framework.

The government’s renewed focus on these sectors can still help create a brighter future for Fiji’s agricultural landscape, generating not only jobs and income for farmers, but also solidifying Fiji’s position in global markets.
