Fiji’s Agricultural Renaissance: Navigating Challenges for a Greener Future

Fiji’s agriculture sector is facing the need for adaptation in response to new challenges. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives and SMEs, Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted that while agriculture has long been a cornerstone of the local economy, it continues to grapple with issues such as fluctuating international market prices and a decline in product quality attributed to climate change.

Kamikamica emphasized the significance of agriculture in Fiji and throughout the Pacific, describing it not just as an industry, but also as a vital part of community life, providing income and food security. He made these remarks during the launch of the 2024 Agri-Innovate Business Plan Competition in Suva.

As Fiji moves toward a future focused on transformation and a greener economy, he stressed the necessity for the agriculture sector to evolve to tackle emerging challenges and seize new economic opportunities. The agri-innovate competition aims to offer small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture a platform to present their innovative ideas and agricultural production methods to both Fiji and the Pacific region.

Joann Young, Assistant Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to Fiji, noted that agriculture is crucial for Fiji’s economy, providing jobs, ensuring food security, and making a significant contribution to the national GDP. However, she pointed out that MSMEs in this sector frequently encounter challenges such as restricted market access, insufficient technical expertise, and limited financial resources.

Young called for support and nurturing of these entrepreneurs to unlock the potential of the agricultural sector, stimulate economic growth, and foster a sustainable and resilient future for Fiji. She encouraged collaboration among stakeholders, including governmental bodies, development partners, and the private sector, to harness innovation and entrepreneurship to transform Fiji’s agricultural landscape. By empowering MSMEs, she believes they can lead significant improvements in the sector.
