Fiji’s Agri-Future: Unleashing Innovation for Economic Growth

Fiji is in need of more innovative and resilient agricultural entrepreneurs, according to Joann Young, the Assistant Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to Fiji. Young highlighted her recent meetings with young farmers who exhibited impressive innovation and resilience in their farming practices. She emphasized that their experiences demonstrate the potential within Fiji’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the significant impact they can have on the local economy and community.

Over the last two years, the FAO has worked closely with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs, and Communications, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture, to identify ways to support agribusinesses in Fiji. They have also partnered with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) to leverage its strong network in the private sector.

Young underscored the importance of agriculture in Fiji’s economy, pointing out its role in providing jobs, ensuring food security, and making substantial contributions to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). This statement was made during the launch of the 2024 Agri-Innovate Business Plan competition.

However, she noted that MSMEs in the agricultural sector face significant challenges, including limited market access, insufficient technical expertise, and a lack of financial resources. The Agri-Innovate competition aims to tackle these issues by offering a platform for MSMEs to present their innovative ideas, products, and services while accessing the necessary support and resources for success.

By fostering and supporting these entrepreneurs, Young believes that Fiji can realize the full potential of its agricultural sector, stimulate economic growth, and build a more sustainable and resilient future.
