Fiji’s Australian Football League (AFL) team is gearing up to participate in the 2024 Pacific Cup, a significant moment for a sport that traditionally takes a back seat to rugby and soccer in the nation. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Australia from November 14 to 16.
The team, which is a blend of seasoned players and newcomers, has undertaken rigorous training for seven weeks, navigating challenges related to funding and sponsorship along the way. The roster features eight players with prior international experience from previous World Cups, nine players who have risen through Fiji’s AFL development program, and eleven who will represent the nation for the first time.
Head coach Alipate Navuso emphasizes the strength of the team’s foundation, noting that the experienced players provide stability while the younger members inject energy and potential into the group. Despite the AFL’s status as a minor sport in Fiji, local sponsor Flame Tree has stepped in to provide some support; however, many athletes have had to cover their own expenses—including transportation, food, and accommodation—to attend training.
Navuso shared, “A lot of the boys have been covering their own costs. It’s a big commitment, but they’ve been showing up every day.” The team has set an ambitious goal: to win the Pacific Cup. The players have fully committed to this aim, maintaining consistent attendance throughout their training regimen. “Our ambition is clear; we’re here to compete. We’ve trained hard and aim to bring the cup home,” Navuso stated.
The squad acknowledges the backing of families, friends, and community members who have supported them throughout their journey. As they head into the Pacific Cup, Fiji’s AFL team not only carries their aspirations but also the hope of establishing a brighter future for the sport in the country.
This competition represents a pivotal opportunity for the growth of AFL in Fiji, showcasing the dedication and resilience of the athletes. It serves as a testament to the importance of community support in nurturing and developing sports beyond the more traditionally popular options.
Overall, the Fiji AFL team’s participation in the Pacific Cup is a promising development, and their commitment to success may inspire future generations to engage with the sport on a broader level.
