Fiji’s AFL team is gearing up for the 2024 Pacific Cup, a significant moment for the sport in a nation where rugby and soccer are more prevalent. The competition will take place in Australia from November 14 to 16.

The squad is composed of a blend of seasoned athletes and rising stars, having completed seven weeks of rigorous training despite facing financial challenges. The team comprises eight players with prior international experience from previous World Cups, nine who have progressed through Fiji’s AFL development pathways, and eleven newcomers representing the country for the first time.

Head coach Alipate Navuso expressed confidence in the team, saying, “We have a strong base with our experienced players, while the younger players bring energy and potential.” However, funding remains an ongoing challenge as AFL is viewed as a minor sport in Fiji. Local sponsor Flame Tree has provided some assistance, but many players have had to cover their own expenses for travel, food, and accommodation during training.

Navuso highlighted the commitment of the players, stating, “A lot of the boys have been covering their own costs. It’s a big commitment, but they’ve been showing up every day.” The team is aiming for a bold goal: to win the Pacific Cup. The players have demonstrated unwavering dedication, maintaining full attendance throughout their training program.

“Our ambition is clear; we’re here to compete. We’ve trained hard and aim to bring the cup home,” Navuso added. The squad is grateful for the unwavering support from their families, friends, and community members, who have encouraged them throughout this journey.

As Fiji’s AFL team prepares for the upcoming competition, they not only seek to perform exceptionally but also aim to strengthen the future of AFL in Fiji. This determination showcases their resilience and commitment, reflecting a promising outlook for the sport’s growth in the country.

Overall, the team’s diligent preparation, community support, and commitment can inspire greater interest and investment in AFL, potentially leading to a brighter future for the sport in Fiji.
